The Salk lnstitute for Biological Studies is one of the world’s preeminent research institutions and its campus is also world famous architecturally. Stellar Solar was therefore honored to be chosen to design and install its new 500kW PV solar system, which will cover the roof area of all four major buildings on campus but will not be visible from the ground, a key requirement. Stellar was selected because it was a local firm with a proven track record of success, according to Tim Ball, the lnstitute’s senior director of facilities services. 11We wanted to work with a firm that could integrate themselves easily into our existing work on a weekly basis. Stellar has theknow-how to do that,” he said.
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies is globally recognized as one of the preeminent research institutions in existence, dedicated to life-changing discoveries in neuroscience, genetics, and plant biology. Its campus, designed by legendary architect Louis Kahn, is an international architectural landmark. For a facility defined by such rigorous scientific and aesthetic standards, any infrastructure project must be executed with absolute precision. In July 2011, the Salk Institute partnered with Stellar Solar Commercial to design and install a high-capacity 541 kWp solar energy system that spans all four major buildings on its iconic campus.
A primary requirement for the Salk Institute was that the solar installation must not interfere with the famous lines and Brutalist architecture of the campus. Stellar Solar Commercial engineered a specialized “invisible” rooftop solution, ensuring that while the buildings became power-generating assets, the technology remained completely hidden from ground-level view to preserve Kahn’s original vision.
The technical architecture of the Salk Institute installation features:
-2,352 Trina Solar 230-Watt Modules: This massive array of over two thousand panels was distributed across the roofs of all four primary laboratory buildings, maximizing energy harvest without a single panel visible from the courtyard or surrounding grounds.
-1 x SMA 500 kW Inverter: To manage the immense power requirements of world-class laboratory equipment and climate-controlled research environments, we utilized a high-capacity SMA central inverter for efficient, industrial-scale power conversion.
-541 kWp Installed Capacity: Placed into service in 2011, this system was engineered to offset a substantial portion of the institute’s massive electrical load, providing a reliable and sustainable source of energy for ongoing biological research.
In a research environment, energy is more than just a utility; it is a critical component of scientific integrity. Laboratories require 24/7 power for specialized freezers, high-speed computing, and sensitive imaging equipment. By generating over half a megawatt of clean power on-site, the Salk Institute effectively hedged its research budget against over 15 years of utility rate hikes.
Tim Ball, the Institute’s Senior Director of Facilities Services, noted at the time of installation that Stellar was selected because of its proven track record and local expertise. “We wanted to work with a firm that could integrate themselves easily into our existing work on a weekly basis. Stellar has the know-how to do that,” Ball stated. In the 2026 energy landscape, where Southern California utility rates have reached record levels, the ROI of this system continues to support the Institute’s mission of scientific discovery.
Since 1998, Stellar Solar Commercial has been the preferred partner for California’s most architecturally sensitive and technically demanding facilities. Our 28-year history is built on a foundation of engineering excellence and a “quiet-professional” approach to construction that respects the ongoing work of the institutions we serve.
Our in-house team handles the entire lifecycle of these complex 100kW+ projects—from initial structural analysis to navigating the rigorous permitting and utility interconnection requirements for world-class campuses. We specialize in working within high-stakes environments where maintaining operational continuity and aesthetic standards are non-negotiable.
As we move through 2026, the strategy for large-scale research campuses has evolved to include Solar + Battery Storage. For organizations like the Salk Institute, adding a utility-scale battery system provides an essential layer of resilience, ensuring that decades of research and sensitive biological samples remain protected during grid instability or regional power outages.
Stellar Solar Commercial continues to lead this energy revolution, helping California’s scientific and educational leaders build a resilient, low-cost energy future. We turn iconic rooftops into powerful tools for sustainability and innovation.
